All classes are well underway with show practise and the children are thoroughly enjoying the change in routine and pace. As teachers we are also really enjoying involving the children in the choreography which is not something we always get to do in syllabus classes.
Over the past two weeks most students will have tried on a costume for size and I think (hope) I now have everybody’s costume in the correct size and ready to go out. They are slowly taking over my house and I struggle to find my children in the morning because the boxes create good hiding places!!! So it’s time to hand them over to their new owners! Your child will be given their costume in the next two weeks.
Each costume will come with a few tags which includes
Your child’s name, group and dance that they will be in.
What the costume looks like when all put together and includes a note of what accessories are in the bag. Please check the accessory list to your costume and let me know ASAP if something is missing.
Anything extra you need to provide such as ballet tights/shoes
PLEASE LEAVE THESE TAGS HANGING ON YOUR COSTUME AS THEY ARE A GOOD VISUAL ON SHOW DAY.
Please name each individual item of your child's costume including shoes/socks/tights/accessories.
Please do not allow your child to play in their costume until after the show day. There will be no spare costumes. Any damaged or lost costumes will result in your child not being able to dance and no refunds will be given.
Please bring your costumes to Photo Day, Dress Rehearsal and Show day and then take home with you to keep. We will not need the costumes during normal class at any time.
How to store and hang your costumes
Hair and Make-Up
Baby Ballet, Pre-Primary ballet and Primary Ballet: Make-up for this group is foundation, pink blush and eyeshadow, mascara (if they will let you!). Hair is a donut bun in the middle of their head and hair must be neatly slicked with gel and hairspray (no flyaway bits please). Do not put lipstick on your child. Our supervisors will add this once costumes are on.
Grade 1 - Grade 5 Ballet: Hair is a donut bun in the middle of their head and hair must be neatly slicked with gel and hairspray (no flyaway bits please). Make-up for this group is foundation, blush, natural eyeshadow, mascara, eyeliner. Do not put lipstick on your child. Our supervisors will add this once costumes are on.
Tap and Street Dance students: Make-up for this group is foundation, blush, natural eyeshadow, mascara, eyeliner. Hair is a donut bun in the middle of their head and hair must be neatly slicked with gel and hairspray (no flyaway bits please). Do not put lipstick on your child. Our supervisors will add this once costumes are on.
Students should wear a cardigan/jacket to avoid loosening the hairstyle.
NB it can be difficult putting make-up on a child. When you do, please be aware that the bright stage lights will lighten the complexion so generally more and darker is better.

Thank-you so much to those who are helping at our dress rehearsal and shows. The shows would not happen without the help of parents backstage. Dancing on stage is only one part of the experience for the children; they will also remember the buzz of getting ready with their friends and feeling the excitement building backstage. This is where you come in!! To stay calm, positive and support the nervous energy and or extra energy the children may have!
Each helper has been given a group of children to look after. This will be your group at dress rehearsal and one of the shows. All backstage helpers are requested to attend dress rehearsal meaning we will have double adults to help which will be great.
Your main responsibilities will be to
Look after the general well being of each child within your group
Get to know the children you are looking after and make them aware that you are there if they need help with anything
Help children get in and out of costumes
Staying calm and present
Keeping check on hair and makeup
Helping keep the backstage area tidy and orderly
Backstage helpers might not be placed in a group with their own children
